[ Kaveh is quiet as Basch holds him, leaning into the other's hold and letting his eyes close. It's a grief he's been over and over so many times already, but revisiting it hurts each and every time like it were somehow brand new. Especially in a moment like this, he welcomes the comfort, both for the new hurt and for the old.

He reaches into the pocket of his lounge pants, resurfacing with a small earbud case. ]

His ears are really sensitive. Back home, he made himself these special headphones, but of course when we got here they didn't come. It was hard for him at first, until he found these. It got a little easier after that. And then... when he disappeared, so much of his stuff was just gone. Except for these. I've had them since.

[ His nose wrinkles. ]

Xie Lian—he's my friend, I met him here—he came with me. Helped hold me together while I figured it all out. And now... [ He falls quiet, his fingers closing tight around the case. ] Now he's gone too.

[ He knows that grief. Knows it himself, and knows it in the dozens and dozens of soldiers he's comforted after a loss. The best he can do is listen. ]

A clever solution [ he nods. ] I'm glad you had something. That's the hardest part of all of this -- it was at home too, during the war. We anchor ourselves to our new community and then...it shifts, and it's like the floor has fallen in.

You're handling this well, but it's never easy. Even if you've been through it a hundred times.

[ Kaveh nods in return, and he manages a small smile as Basch talks, tells him that he's handling it well. ]

I like to think that I am. But I'm also...

[ He sighs, and his nose wrinkles, his gaze dropping away once more. ]

Every time it happens, I get scared all over again. I've gotten close to so many people since arriving here. I hate to think about not being able to see you all again. Sometimes it's hard even to think about going home because of that. I... it would be nice to be with Alhaitham again, and my friends. But I'd miss all of you.

[ Basch breathes out, a little whistly, the first break in his calm. ]

I understand [ he says quietly ] War was the same, but...I think it scares me more here. It's easier to forget that we aren't all living our lives, that there's still something strange going on. I get night terrors sometimes, that the people most important to me are gone.

I...I would choose not to go back. I do not know if that makes me a bad person, but there is both little life left for me there and much I ought to face up to. I would rather stay here, or follow someone I care for back to their home. But I worry we will not have any choice in the end.

I wish I could provide more comfort, but I've never been any good at lying.

[ Kaveh nods. Night terrors... he's had similar experiences himself, waking up in the middle of the night in a panic, checking the contact list on his watch, flicking through name after name to comfort himself before falling asleep, airbud case in his hand.

And yet Basch says that compared to home, he'd rather stay here.

It says a lot, Kaveh thinks, about the place from which he's come. ]

You don't have to comfort me. In the end, I think we all have the same worries, don't we? The same reasons to be afraid. All we can do is hang onto each other.

[ Basch only sees it as his own weakness. It hasn't occurred to him that perhaps the life he's been dealt, the home he was given, were harder than most. ]

I wish to comfort you, and protect. It is...always how I have been able to care for others. [ It is so little, in the face of everything. And maybe a selfish impulse, to feel some soothing. ] I do think you are right, that all we can is keep those we have close for as long as we have them.

[ So, so like war. ]

[ Kaveh leans across, presses a quick kiss to Basch's cheek. ]

I think we're similar, Basch. You and me. In this, at least. I always want to protect people too. But you're right... in a place like this, sometimes it's hard. So I think... we lean on each other. As much as we need to.

[ He squeezes the other's hand. ]

Thank you. I've been struggling with being alone the last few days and... I just really appreciate this.

[ He's quiet for too long, but it's because he's really listening. And thinking.

He places a hand over Kaveh's, nodding slowly. ]

I...would like that. Lean on each other. You don't need to be alone if you don't want to. [ he squeezes the other's hand. ] And...I don't either.

I'm glad we met.
