🦋 Personality

Option 1: Answer the following questions. Elaborate on the answer, especially your characters thoughts and feelings surrounding the answer. For Canon Characters, you can choose four questions. For Original Characters, you will need to choose six questions. Keep the word count to 150-400 per question.
  1. Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic?

Basch is aware that magic exists in his world, and has worked alongside casters in the military. He also is aware of general myths and folk tales about additional magic. He understands that the Mist exists and has somehow been harnessed for humes to use in set spells, and that the Viera and the Occurria and magical monsters have different access to it than humes. However, he is the first to say he is no caster and no magical theorist. He doesn't really understand how it works and is glad to leave the details up to others.

That said, he's very empirical and willing to believe whatever is in front of him. He would have a hard time with something like the fae in the theoretical, but the minute he's experiencing it, he will diligently ask questions, observe, and build a sense of how things work as far as it impacts his and other's daily life and safety. If confronted with positive magic, he would likely try to divert the effects to others. If it was negative magic, he would likely try to bear the brunt of it to spare others.

Basch is not religious, though he is extremely ethical. He believes in doing good for the sake of it, and that a lord or captain is responsible for the safety of their people. As a child, he loved stories about defenders and good helpful spirits. Any fanciful interest died when the war started, and now anything he remembers is more out of an effort to preserve Landisian culture than any personal affiliation. However, the opportunity to become magical in some way, if it could allow him to better serve and protect, would be appealing to him, to the point of being willing to lose some of himself for those tools. This makes him a really interesting character around the fae.

  2. What mythological creature would your character most like to be? Which do they identify with? Which would they dread being? Feel free to use our Bestiary for reference.

  3. Basch sees himself as a guardian spirit. He would relate the most to lamassu or winged genie from Assyrian belief. The former were often shown with the head of a man, body of a bull, and wings and carved into the gates of major cities to scare off enemies and to protect the king. The latter were bearded men with wings who fought evil spirits and also protected the city and king. Basch's entire identity is as a knight and protector, and he would gladly die for king (or queen) and country.

He would also gladly accept being a guardian spirit or creature to an individual. So long as he has a task and somewhere to look for direction, he feels valuable and complete.

In reality, Basch would likely be more of a beast, something that is not naturally good or evil, but has a propensity toward harm if misunderstood, frightened, or coerced. This would terrify him to know. He is frightened of his (normal) human impulses and repressed emotions and very out of touch with his "natural" instincts. While he would struggle immensely with being something like a werewolf, he would likely come around on being a shifter, quest beast, griffon, or related creature that could still choose its path and loyalties.

Basch is so afraid that there is a seed of genuine darkness in him that he has cut himself off from his own wants and desires. However, most of the people around him can tell that he is good.

  4. If your character could ask for one wish, and it's going to be magically granted without any consequence, what will it be and why?

  5. Basch would wish that he'd stayed with his brother and mother and gotten them situated before he left to help his father with the war. If he had done this, he would have been able to say goodbye to his mother, or maybe helped find a cure to her illness. He also likely wouldn't have had the splintering with his twin and perhaps could have chosen together what to do together. He would have spared his brother so much hurt, and possibly kept connection with the only surviving member of his home.

It would not occur to Basch to more broadly wish for Landis to not have fallen. This would seem impossible to get around without consequences, for one, and for another, it feels bigger than the events of his life specifically. This is hypocritical, because Basch blames himself for the fall of Landis due to his military decisions leading a battalion poorly in his teens and not protecting his general, who lost their battle. While he could wish to have won that battle, his regret at hurting Noah outweighs his regret at failing his general.

He similarly blames the fall of Dalmasca, the loss of the royal family, and the Princess's having to go into hiding on himself since Noah used their likeness as twins to both gain access to the King as well as to destroy Dalmascan morale by framing their most trusted general for the betrayal of their people. Basch holds himself responsible for having hurt Noah and for not having been more aware of the security dangers, as well as leaving the King's side. However, his initial wish of not having left Noah and his mother would, in his mind, still take care of this situation, as he sees his betrayal of his family as the worst choice he made in his life.

  6. What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?

  7. Basch is loyal to a fault. Having joined the military at just shy of sixteen to try to protect his family and his country, then subsequently losing both, he has committed himself to serving and protecting others. His young age and the following years of war mean he did not develop much of a sense of self outside his duty. After being adopted into Dalmasca for his service during the war, Basch gives himself entirely to his service; he rises in rank while also becoming a beloved captain and then general. He is excellent with recruits, and often takes the unwanted chores, difficult students, and worst missions.

Basch doesn't entire realize he is working under a self-imposed sense of atonement for failing to save Landis and his family. He has promised himself he will start a life when his people are safe, but with Dalmasca in the defensive for twenty years, this day never comes and likely never will. When new war broke out two years ago, he knew he was willing to die to protect the leadership and the country's stability.

Once he was imprisoned, he refused to let himself give in because he did not feel he deserved to die. Finding out the princess was alive gave him a renewed purpose, and he once again expects to die serving her.

Basch is also loyal to a fault with those he has decided to trust. He has never once held his brother accountable for his horrific actions; it does not even occur to him. Basch will similarly provide his earnest advice to those her serves, but his empathy will allow him to justify every one of their decisions. This makes Basch very codependent and susceptible to manipulation despite his leadership ability.
