He's tucked into a booth with a red wine in hand, sipping from it while he waits for Basch to arrive. (Slow sips. He's not here to get drunk tonight.)
When he does see the other man, he smiles, raises his hand in greeting as he waits for him to make it across to the booth he's occupied for them. ]
Hey, [ he says, and he stands up to press a warm kiss to the other's cheek. ] I'm glad you could come.

Of course [ Basch agrees, settling into his side of the table. ] In all honesty, I could use this too, so thank you for agreeing. [ He thankfully doesn't feel awkward or like he has to address their less than wonderful text exchange. They're both here. That was the whole point. ]

[ He reaches for one of the menus, holding it out to the other. Like Basch, he doesn't feel the need to revisit their text discussion—unfortunately, though, the events of the day are first and foremost in his mind, leaving him struggling to think of anything else to talk about, despite having any number of topics at hand. So... food. A good beginning. ]
Are you hungry? It's on me tonight. What do you like to eat, Basch?

Date: 2025-02-19 03:26 am (UTC)Restaurants weren't something he entirely felt comfortable with when he arrived here, but now they are a pleasant part of his life, all the more with a friend. His palette has expanded -- and honestly, recovered. He takes the menu, it not escaping his attention that whoever pays, this meal is essentially paid for with sex. Which -- they have not had. He's not sure if that makes this sweeter or stranger. Not that he minds. ]
Between war and prison, I got used to not being picky about food. It's been wonderful to change it here [ he adds, not meaning to bring the mood down ] but I quite enjoy trying things others like, as there are simply too many things for me try on my own.
That said, I like savory dishes, and with the cold, anything hearty.

Unlike Basch, he's not really thinking about how the meal has been paid for; after all, he gained a large amount of capital in his early months here just by having a boyfriend. Being here is so far away from being at home, where he has to check on his finances what feels like every few minutes... here, they hardly concern him at all.
What the other says next surprises him, though; he pauses in looking through the menu to glance up at Basch instead, a curious tilt of his head in the soldier's direction. ]
You've been in prison? [ he asks. They've talked about war, of course—but they've never talked about his being imprisoned...
He has a recommendation for something hearty, but it feels like the wrong time to offer it just now. ]
